Chamomile dates back at least to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, when it was dedicated to their sun god for being a cure for the 'Ague' or fever. It is mentioned as an herb during the middle ages and is one of the ‘Nine Sacred Herbs’ of the Anglo Saxons. Chamomile is the one ingredient found in all love potions and mentioned in Greek mythology as used by the gods.
Chamomile dates back at least to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, when it was dedicated to their sun god for being a cure for the 'Ague' (What we would now probably describe as Acute Fever). Chamomile is mentioned as an herb during the middle ages and is one of the ‘Nine Sacred Herbs’ of the Anglo Saxons. Chamomile is the one ingredient found in all love potions and mentioned in Greek mythology as used by the gods.
Chamomile, for me, has been associated mainly as a tea and did not become a staple part of my diet until recently. As a teenager the cool thing to drink was Coke. You know; that nutritional drink with lots of sugar, caffeine and full of teeth and gut destroying acid.
Alchemists developed the technique of distilling chamomile and the first appearance of the ‘essential oil’ started to be used on the skin. Used externally chamomile has a number of important characteristics and is particularly advantageous in the care of sensitive skin.
Chamomile extract contains active flavonoid and essential oil compounds which have anti-inflammatory properties. This appears to be as it inhibits the release of histamines, has anti-free radical action and is an inhibition of the super oxide radical synthesis.
In every day terms – it is great for the skin and reduces skin irritations.
Chamomile is
- A tonic for sensitive and irritated skin,
- Sooths tired legs and sensitive skin – especially if added to the bath,
- Enhances sun protection products and after-sun soothing products, and
- A repairing product for fair / blond hair and sooths the scalp
